Caitlin and Derrick – 1880s America

Caitlin had never been one to disobey orders from her father and technically, it wasn't she who was doing the disobeying. The pale blonde shifted on her brother's shoulder, sighing quietly as he carried her down the hall. She'd learned as a child that there was no possible way to change her brother's mind once he got something into his head.
"Just because you've turned into a young woman is no reason to keep you locked in the house like a bloody animal!" He was ranting, grumbling to himself. Derrick was two years older then his younger sister and was currently looking for a wife... Not that it was difficult to find a willing woman, it was simply he wanted one different from those perfectly controlled New English girls that traveled in his social circles.
Caitlin was one of those girls. Quiet, gentle, controlled and tamed. It drove her brother insane, especially on occasions like this. Ever since Caitlin had started approaching the age of marriage, their father had been more and more reluctant to allow her out and on her own. It was as though he felt something terrible might happen to her in such a way that she would no longer be eligible for marriage.
Caitlin didn't seem to mind and stayed in her room when she was told to, embroidering or reading the diaries her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother had left behind. She often spent quite a bit of time writing letters to her cousin, whose family had traveled out west to seek the newer, untamed lands and perhaps gold.
Derrick walked straight past their father, where he was lounging in their living room and out the front door. Once outside, Caitlin lifted her voice a bit, "Derrick..." She started; twisting to make sure no one was around to see her in such an unlady-like state. "Please, let me down. Please. You'll make father furious with you."
"I don't give a damn what that old rooster says, you're getting some fresh air. I'll be surprised if you even remember how to walk." But he did set her down and give her a studying look. Without a care for her further protests, he grabbed her hand and headed for their small stable. Caitlin had loved horses in her childhood and pre-teen years, before her father had been restricting her outdoor time.
"Even if we go no where else but town, let's get out of here. Maybe we could get you a new dress?" He suggested as he pulled out the already saddled horses and lifted his fairly small sister into one and gave her a slight smile. "What'd you say, Cat?"
Caitlin couldn't help but smile at her older brother as he used his old childhood nickname for her and adjusted her skirts more properly for riding. She fastened the last few buttons on her high necked dress and pulled her gloves on daintily. Caitlin wasn't what one would call an outstanding beauty. She wasn't ugly; she simply... wasn't very noticeable. Her skin was pale from indoor keeping, her lips and eyelashes pale, her hair, which she kept in a severely tight bun at the very base of her neck, was even pale, a sort of dull buttery color. She wasn't very big either, maybe about five feet or a little over, without any exceptional curves. The only thing startling about her appearance were her large bright purple eyes. Although if one got past the lack of color in her face (which took a lot of looking, sadly), it wasn't too bad to look at. A little mouth, but with full lips, a small, cute nose... but those eyes were still a bit odd. Perhaps the best words would be: strangely intense. As though if one were to stare long enough, one might be sucked in.
Caitlin very much took after their mother in her lack of coloring, for she looked very different from her older brother. He was much larger then she, as a man should be, with fine muscle and lovely shoulders. His current practice left his skin quite tanned and lovely. He was to be the heir of his father's business, owning a good railroad upon which he had reamed his considerable amount of money. Therefore, leaving Derrick with fairly little to do until his father deemed it time to include him more in the family business. The young man did indeed hope that to be soon, for he was getting tired of being the ambassador of sorts for his father, representing him at most all social occasions.
Derrick sighed a bit as he watched his sister adjust for a ride out to town. She had every bit of skin covered with her back perfectly straight and if she'd had her way, she'd be wearing some awful little hat. He grimaced and mounted his own horse, leading hers out of the barn. If only he'd had some say in how his poor sister had grown up. But he had been away at school for the most piece of it, harnessing his incredible talent for numbers and pressing his poor brain into more learning.
Derrick ignored the slight curls that escaped the ribbon which kept his slightly longer then fashionable hair back from his face, allowing soft wisps of bright gold to frame his face. While his sister had perhaps taken their mother's pale wispy coloring, Derrick seemed to have taken the good fortune of his father's pleasantly decent looks. However, this was a blessing for it was a very masculine beauty; a strong jaw, slightly crooked nose. The only thing on his face that had belonged to his mother were his brilliant purple eyes. Those were the one thing the siblings shared in common, inheritance wise.
